Community Medicine

Introduction

            Department of Preventive and Social Medicine was started in 1986 in Dr.Panjabrao Alias Bhausaheb Deshmukh Memorial Medical College. The department is involved in teaching, research and extension service & outreach activities.

Goals

           To prepare students as competent first level physicians suited to cater need of community in Indian context. With this goal in mind, integrated teaching, skill development, AETCOM and self-directed learning have been introduced with more focus on family health care and to achieve health related Sustainable Development Goals. There would be emphasis on communication and basic clinical skills with professionalism.

Objectives: U.G. Students

Empowering the students with knowledge, skills & positive attitude to work as first level contact physicians.
To produce health professionals capable of providing integrated preventive, promotive, curative & rehabilitative health services to the community. Keeping in mind Health Problems in Indian Context, National Health Policy and Programmes.
To be able to appreciate sociopsychological, cultural, economic & environmental factors affecting health.
To sharpen the behavioral changes, communication skills of young minds so that they can guide the services of fraternity on the tracks to positive health.
To strive for excellence in research aimed at developing appropriate technology / strategies for prevention and control of communicable & non-communicable diseases as per the needs of community.
To use principles of epidemiology & biostatistics as scientific tool to make rational decisions relevant to community & individual patient intervention.

Objectives: P.G. Students

At the end of the MD program in Community Medicine the student will

Know the structure and functioning of the health system at the National and International levels and its historical perspectives.
Know the principles of nutrition, maternal health and family welfare and put the same into practice.
Apply the principles of Epidemiology and Biostatistics to health practice including the design and implementation of health related research studies and clinical preventive medicine trails.
Know the principles of Communicable and Non-communicable diseases control and assist in the implementation of National Health programmes at a program level.
Identify the socio-cultural dimension in Health and disease and apply this knowledge in the design and implementation of an integrated Health and development program.
Apply the principals of environmental and occupational health in the design of health programmes aimed at improving health status.
Access specific health situations in a population, plan, organize, implement and evaluate programs aimed at improving health situations.
. Identify the health needs of the special groups within populations especially the aged, the disabled and the worker and to respond to that need.
Know the principles of learning and apply this knowledge in facilitating the learning process in groups of people involved in health.
Relate his/her knowledge of curative medicine to the improvement of the health status of a given population.
Identify the role of the Government, Private and Voluntary sector in health and understand the principles of innovations in health practices and research.
